What BMI can and can’t tell you
BMI is a quick screening measure used in research and clinics. It does not measure body fat directly, does not show where fat is stored, and can misclassify very muscular people and some older adults. Waist size, blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol give a fuller picture. Talk with your doctor about what your number means for you.
Next step: estimate your calorie needs with the calorie deficit calculator.
